FAQ

» How do I get started?

If you are an SRC member who has never rowed before (sailing, canoeing and kayaking don’t count), you will start in the novice class or with individual private lessons. If you have some experience you will be evaluated by a coach for appropriate placement in one of our rowing programs. Non-members can try one of our Learn to Row Programs for adult non-members. Start dates for Learn to Row are May, June, July and September. Please call Rowing Director Nicoleta Mantescu at 203-221-7475 for a consultation.

» How flexible is the program? I have a tight schedule.

Members are sent a mailing two months prior to the start of the indoor and outdoor seasons and attend an organizational meeting. Coaches evaluate rowers and organize boats and practice schedules based on team members’ availability.

» What if I want to row with a friend or a particular group?

We make every effort to schedule people who want to row together in the same class. Many groups have formed as novices and progressed to the master’s level. Buddies help keep up enthusiasm and encourage teammates to stick with the program. However, coaches have the final say in qualifying rowers to use particular boats.

» What equipment will I need?

The Club provides all the equipment you need to go out and row. However, you will need to wear proper clothing depending on the weather, plus sneakers or boating shoes and socks. Check out safety on the water.

» What if I cannot attend a class?

You must give at least 24-hours notice if you have to miss class. It is your responsibility to find a replacement. If you cannot, notify the club. This is very important because if you are rowing in a team boat the boat cannot go on the water without you and we have to try to find a replacement. You will be given a makeup only if there is room in another compatible class.

» What makes your program different?

SRC has an unparalleled combination of facilities. SRC is not only a world-class boathouse with first-class equipment and top professional coaches; it houses a state-of-the art fitness center that allows rowers to train properly all year round.

» What about use of the locker room?

Our facility has a fully equipped locker room with a steam room as well as showers, free towels and complimentary toiletries. You can eat a light breakfast or lunch in the Regatta Room or dine at lunch or dinner at our Riverview Restaurant.
