Adult Rowing - Saugatuck Rowing and Fitness Club

Adult Rowing

Those who have experienced rowing know there’s nothing quite like it. The grace of the sport’s form and movements… the peace of gliding on water as day breaks…the satisfaction of personal achievement and the camaraderie of working within a team. Rowers will tell you that rowing is metaphysical, bringing relaxation to both mind and body with each stroke. But there are also very practical health and fitness benefits for taking up this sport. Almost anyone can row regardless of age or level of fitness and it’s a sport that can be enjoyed lifelong.

All Adult Programs are for adults age 21 and older. SRC offers an array of programs that provide a safe and supported opportunity to anyone who is interested in rowing, regardless of age, gender, physical ability or rowing experience. Specific programs are offered for beginners, recreational rowers and experienced rowers under the guidance of our expert coaches. We also offer opportunities for rowers of all levels to compete in regattas throughout the season.

SRC rows on the water from March through November, then we move indoors for Winter Training. You must be a member of SRC to row in our group training programs and race in regattas. All fees below are in addition to our monthly membership fee. See Membership Levels.

Adult Learn to Row Program

This beginner level program is a wonderful way for both SRC members and non-members to get on the water and learn more about the sport of rowing. Sessions are designed to get adults on the water quickly, learn the fundamentals of rowing, and prepare for the next step. The coaching staff works to provide a fun, energetic and enthusiastic atmosphere for all levels of fitness and ability. We offer both group clinics and private lesson packages for beginners. Learn to Row group programs begin in May. Learn to Row private lessons begin in April.

• Group Clinics: meet monthly 2 x per week for 4 weeks.

• LTR Private Lesson Package: (4) 1.5 hr lessons. Cost: $525 for members.  $700 for non-members.

Each month we will offer a different adult learn to row (May – October)

You may also email LearnToRow@SaugatuckRowing.com if you have questions not answered here!

After you Learn to Row, and receive the green light to row on your own, the use of our club boats (singles and doubles) is included in membership (no additional cost). After graduating the program, you may choose to row on your own, or join our monthly group training which requires an extra fee (see below).

Expectations: Everyone learns at a different rate, but you will most likely not receive the green light to row on your own after only 4 weeks (1 month clinic). Usually you need two months of clinics or you can supplement with private lessons. After your first learn to row, a second session will take place the following month during the same time / days.

Membership: you may take LTR 1 as a non-member. LTR 2 does require membership. We offer annual contracts and month-to-month membership. Email Membership@SaugatuckRowing.com for more information.

Monthly Group Training:

Recreational

This program is for SRC members who wish to enjoy rowing and the camaraderie of friends in a non-competitive environment. Coaches design workouts to both improve skill level and overall fitness. Workouts are geared towards skill development, fitness and boat speed. Coaches put race line-ups together based on skill and fitness. The Masters Head Coach will organize the boats for competition, arrange practices, and handle regatta entries and boat transportation. Additional regatta fees will apply. Groups are a minimum of 6 people and meet 3-4 times a week. Athletes are encouraged to train year-round.

Adult Winter Rowing Program

The 80 adults on the SRC masters team train indoors in the winter, and classes are open to fitness enthusiasts to join the fun.  The training consists of rowing on the Concept II machine, mixed with weights, bikes and body weight exercises.  There is a lot of cardio and rowing, of course, but mobility, core strength and overall body balance are key features of this program.  Various team challenges, partner workouts and clever designs are also used to keep the workouts fun and interesting.

The workload and intensity of these classes is high, but can be scaled to accommodate athletes of different levels.  Even if you don’t know how to row (on the water), this is a great way to get in the best shape of your life.
