Masters (For adult's age 27 and older)
SRC offers an array of programs that provide a safe and supported opportunity to anyone who is interested in rowing, regardless of age, gender, physical ability or rowing experience. Specific programs are offered for beginners, recreational rowers and experienced rowers under the guidance of our expert coaches. We also offer opportunities for rowers of all levels to compete in regattas throughout the season.
Novice
Designed for adult members with little or no rowing experience. Participants receive basic lessons in the form and principles of rowing, both sweep rowing and sculling. Novices will learn to handle, carry, launch and row a shell on the beautiful Saugatuck River. This class is offered in one month increments and novice instruction is considered complete after three months.
Intermediate Program
For those who wish to graduate from novice class to the competitive program or recreational rowers who want to improve their skills. Private and group lessons are offered for both sculling and sweep rowing, with some members doing both. Scullers row in a single seat boat with an oar in each hand. Sweep rowing is done in either four or eight people boats (shells), in which each rower has one oar. SRC coaches evaluate participants and organize the crews.
Recreational Program
SRC members who wish to row in a single or in any other boat, with no intention to compete, enjoy easy access to the water, camaraderie with other rowers and our outstanding fitness center. They can participate in the intermediate program to improve skills. An SRC coach before taking out a boat must evaluate recreational rowers.
Competitive Program
For members of all ages who wish to commit to intensive training for the purpose of racing. Boats are set based on tryouts on the ergs, technique and seat racing. The SRC director of rowing and coaches organize the boats for different levels of competition, arrange practices, and handle regatta entries and boat transportation.
How the program works
Adult rowers are evaluated and rated by SRC coaches. The coaches organize boat teams at each level and set up lessons/practice schedules for each season, based on the availability of rowers. Every effort is made to accommodate groups that want to row together. Coaches also design individual workout schedules for each rower to increase stamina and fitness and they also organize boats for regattas.
Rowers receive a mailing two months before the start of each season informing them of the programs offered and the requirements. Rowers send in their enrollment forms and attend a general meeting to meet with the coaches, who then start the evaluation process. Rowers also review the guidelines for boat and equipment usage and water safety prior to the start of each season.
If you would like to join one of these programs, or have more questions, please call Rowing Director Costel Mutescu at 203-221-7475.
