Two Week Summer Sessions:

Are your kids between the ages of 11-15? We offer 2 week, 3 hour daily learn to row sessions. Most rowers are new to the sport or have limited experience. We limit each session to a smaller group of 20 rowers. The rowers will have the opportunity to experience both Sweep rowing and Sculling. The rowers will spend time on land working on necessary body weight strengthening, balancing, and flexibility exercises. They will also learn about the rowing machine and there will be some down time to play games. The goal is for the rowers to get a fun introduction to the sport.

Summer Competitive Development Group:

Start Date: June 10
Finish Date: July 19
Time: 2-4pm Monday-Friday (note for the first week, practice will be from 3:30-6pm until Staples is out for the Summer)

The Summer Competitive Development group is designed for rowers looking to move up to the novice program in the Fall or for Novice rowers returning to the team in the fall. Most novices that are moving up to the Varsity team in the Fall will do the advanced summer program. The Development group will focus on building skills in smaller boats, building strength on the rowing machine and weights. The goal of the group is to prepare the athletes for the novice program in the fall. Note there will be tryouts for the novice team on August 12-23 from 2:30-4:30 PM.

Summer Competitive Advanced Group:
Start Date: June 10
Finish Date: July 19
Time: 10-12pm and 4-6pm Monday-Friday (note for the first week, practice will be from 3:30-6pm until Staples is out for the Summer)

The Summer Competitive Advanced group is designed for Varsity athletes. The morning practices will focus on weights, erging and small boats. The afternoons will be a mixture of small boats and eights. The program will focus on building strength to lower erg scores and look to increase technical ability. The goal of the program is to set the athletes for a positive fall season by working on strengthening their weaknesses. We will not attend any races, however there will be a lot of inter-squad pieces in small boats and the eights.

Beginner Spring Rowing Program:

The Saugatuck Beginner rowing program is for athletes ages 11.5-14 years old. Most beginner rowers are new to the sport or have limited experience. We want the beginner rowers to enjoy being on the water while they gain a basic understanding of how to safely row on the Saugatuck river. Beginner rowers will have the opportunity to experience both Sweep rowing and Sculling. While the beginner rower may have the vision to one day compete in the sport, beginner rowing is not a competitive team. Beginner is strictly an introductory group and is a great steppingstone to the intermediate program as well as the competitive team. The beginner rowers will spend time on land working on necessary body weight strengthening, balancing, and flexibility exercises. Rowing is a physically demanding activity which requires a strong core, proficient balance, full body coordination and mobility.

Days and Practice Times:
Price: $1,460 (SRC parent members receive discount per session)

Beginner Spring Training
Weekday (4/2-5/23): Tuesday & Thursday: 5:15-6:45pm or
Weekend (3/30-5/19) Saturday & Sunday: 11:30-1:00pm

Intermediate Spring Rowing Program:

Rowers will have had at least two seasons in “Beginner” either at Saugatuck Rowing Club or another program.  Athletes in Intermediate will continue to build upon the fundamentals. The difference between Beginner and Intermediate is the intermediate rower has demonstrated they are proficient with posture and balance in the rowing shells. Intermediate rowers have also demonstrated basic strength movements. The intermediate can handle a slight increase of intensity in training. Athletes in Intermediate are focused on learning how to train with intention and consistency.  As in both Beginner and Competitive the intermediate rowers will be presented with an abundance of other land strength training exercises which will improve the individual’s mobility, which will allow them to train safely, and effectively while rowing. Athletes in Intermediate will have a preview, in smaller workloads, of what they can expect on the Competitive team.  At the end of the season, the Intermediate coaches will let each athlete know if they are ready to move up and tryout for competitive or if they need more time in the intermediate program. Not all athletes are ready to move up after one season of Intermediate. The rower must demonstrate they have a strong work ethic, and sound body mechanics while rowing on the water. They must also work well with their teammates, be focused, and have a great attitude.
