Competitive Program
Spring / Fall - Mon. through Fridays from 3:30pm to 6:00pm (plus weekend practices and regattas) Summer -Mon. through Fridays from 3:00pm to 5:30pm Winter - TBD
This is a competitive program that represents the club at many regattas throughout the year. Athletes have the opportunity to compete in several regattas each season in both sweep and sculling events. Attendance at practice and regattas is required (more than 3 unexcused absences could jeopardize the athlete’s boat placement as well as result in dismissal from the program). Water and land training are used to help athletes develop both mentally and physically. Improvements in technique and fitness level are measured through periodic testing. Seat placement (varsity, junior varsity, and novice) is determined by test performance, commitment, and work ethic. Admittance into the program is based on technique, erg scores, and coach’s recommendation. Those interested in being on the team need to attend the fall try out session or contact the coaches about a trial session in the winter just prior to the spring season.
Intermediate Program
Weekday session meets Monday Wednesday, Friday 5:00 to 6:30pm Weekend session meets Saturday and Sunday 10:00 - 11:30 am
This program is designed for athletes who want to better prepare themselves for the competitive program or for those who cannot commit to practicing 5 days a week. On the water athletes learn to train more rigorously while continuing to focus on technical development. On land athletes erg, run, and do a variety of calisthenics to improve overall fitness and their performance in the boats. Athletes will not travel to regattas but they will be exposed to inter-squad racing. On the recommendation of coaches, participants can graduate to the competitive program.
Beginner Program
Weekday session meets Tuesday and Thursday 5:00 to 6:30 pm Weekend session meets Saturday and Sunday 11:30 - 1:00 pm
This is a beginner level program designed to introduce young athletes to all aspects of rowing. Athletes are exposed to both sweep (one oar) and sculling (two oars) and experience rowing in singles as well as team boats. Focus is on technique as well as improving fitness. In addition to spending time in the boats athletes will do land training (erging, running, and calisthenics) to help improve fitness and technique for on the water. On the recommendation of coaches, participants can graduate to the intermediate or competitive program.
Winter Intermediate/Beginner Program
Weekday Session meets Wed. and Fridays 5:45 to 7:15 pm Weekend Session meets Sat. and Sundays 11:00 to 12:30pm
This program is designed for both intermediate rowers and beginner rowers as an introduction to indoor training. Athletes will use the ergs (indoor rowing machines) to learn and improve technique as well as improve cardiovascular fitness. They will also do a variety of calisthenics to improve strength and stretching to improve flexibility. Athletes new to rowing will be well prepared to move onto the water in the spring while intermediate athletes will continue to improve both their rowing technique and fitness.
Summer Program
Meets Mon through Fridays from 9:00am to 12:00pm or 1:00pm to 4:00pm
SRC’s two-week summer sessions are an intensive introduction to rowing for youngsters. Athletes are exposed to both sweep (one oar) and sculling (two oars) and experience rowing in singles as well as team boats. Focus is on technique as well as improving fitness. In addition to spending time in the boats, athletes will do some land training (erging, running, and calisthenics). On the recommendation of coaches, participants can graduate to the intermediate or varsity programs in the fall.
College Program
SRC offers a College Program for collegiate rowers wishing to continue training after the spring term ends. Fees for the program include use of the boathouse and fitness center and one on the water coached session in the evening on Mon.-Fri. Athletes will be given a training program that encourages additional workouts to be done as well. Depending on the number and ability of athletes in the program it may be competitive with opportunities to compete in several summer regattas or it may be more focused on technique and improving fitness.
All junior programming is dependant upon a sufficient number of participants to run a meaningful program.
